Tract Homes

Tract housing (also known as Cookie-Cutter Houses) is a style of housing development in which multiple identical, or nearly-identical, homes are built on a tract of land purchased for that purpose. Tract homes seem to be springing up everywhere! Builders are building thousands of nearly identical homes as cheaply as they can trying to find a way to squeeze as many houses as possible on their land. Most tract homes have a simple rectangular plan with no gable or at most a single gabled roof resulting in a "salt-box" shape. As a tract housing development only makes use of a few designs, labor costs are reduced because the home builders need not be skilled craftsmen. The repetitive nature of the plans, and the large number of units produced, are the most significant factors in reducing the cost of these houses. These practices reduce the final price of the homes, and allow greater profits for the developers. Home buyers rarely see the benefits of these savings!
